Denotation and Connotation

Denotation: A lot of dull colours (brown, green etc..). The boy is staring straight into the camera. He's frowning and his head is slightly drooped.  Large, bold writing is used, it's written in white. Set in a sandy area. The logo is in the corner, the blue makes it stand out against the brown. The background is blurred out, the camera is focused on the boy and the writing.

Connotation/Analysis: The boy is staring into the camera in an attempt to connect with the consumer and make the target audience feel pity or guilt. He seems quite upset and annoyed. The dull colours don't grab the consumer's attention but the bold white letters get the audience's attention and it's the focal point of the advert. We can tell it's not set in the UK because of the sandy background with minimal greenery, it's more likely to be set in Africa. The white connotes pure and clean which suggests we should help make the environment better and do this by "Digging toilets. Not graves." The small logo in the corner means the focus isn't on the charity, they rely on the child to evoke sympathy and get the target audience to donate and volunteer with the charity. The browns suggest that he is living in dirty conditions and needs our help to improve the situation. The washed out blue on his t shirt indicates water but because it is washed out, it could mean there isn't a lot of clean water. The ''not graves'' suggest that without help, these people won't be able to afford the basic human requirements (e.g. clean water) and they could die. This leaves a lasting impact on the consumer and emphasises the importance of helping these charities.

Denotation: A lot of bright colours have been used, mostly blue and red. There is a large picture of Santa Claus and he is holding a bottle of coca cola with a green bow on it. The coca cola logo is in the corner and the tagline reads "Make someone happy". The background is empty and there are stars/sparkles coming out of the bottle.

Connotation: The red connotes Christmas which is usually associated with happiness and a time to celebrate. The blue suggests hydration and calm. By placing Santa Claus (symbol of christmas) in the centre, it draws people's attention to the figure. This is placed strategically to draw children's attention to it which could persuade them to buy it. The green bow tells us the drink is a gift to be enjoyed. The picture looks like he is handing the bottle to us, trying to get us to "take it"(buy the product). The producer is trying to make a connection with the consumer, this ad most probably would be released around wintertime. The man has a large grin which implies the drink will bring us happiness.

'Breakfast At Tiffany's' Poster Analysis

                                                                                                                                                 Language:

Audrey Hepburn, the star of the movie, is clearly    used for star power to attract more viewers as she was
a very popular movie star with many fans. Her name is
very large and bold, almost as much as the title of the
movie. Hepburn's character is portrayed as very elegant
with a dress and fancy jewellery. She looks like a posh,
girly character. The landscape of skyscrapers are shown
in the background which indicates the movie takes place
in a city, perhaps New York. The skyscrapers suggest a
business but the couple in front tell us romance will be a
prominent part of the movie. The bright colours tell us
this will be a happy movie and not include themes such as
horror or suspense.

Industry:
The company Paramount is written in small letters on
the bottom which tells us the company was probably
not as big as it is now so they can't rely on the
company for views. 'Technicolor' is written on the
bottom in big letters which was a way of indicating how
advanced the company was as colour was only just being
brought into movies in the 1960's.
Audience:
The movie looks like it's directed towards females as it
has a woman on the poster. The theme of romance is
stereotypically directed towards women. Despite the cover
being animated, it seems as though it's directed towards
adults as they'll enjoy romance movies more.
Representation:
The woman is depicted as being into fashion and dressing
well which was thought of women in the 60's and it plays into
the traditional role of women in society.

Introduction to the course

1) Which part of the course are you looking forward to most?

I'm most looking forward to filming a music video or taking pictures for the magazine cover.
2) What knowledge and skills do you hope to learn in Media?

I hope to learn how to use photoshop and how to edit.

3) What grade are you realistically hoping to achieve in Media?

I am hoping to achieve a grade 7/8.
4) What was the last TV programme or film you watched?

The last TV programme I watched was 'Riverdale'.
5) Why do you think that TV programme or film appealed to an audience?

The cast and producers used a lot of social media when advertising and promoting the show so a lot of young people saw more about the show. The use of sites such as Instagram made it seem more suited for teenagers rather than older people. The clips they showed included a wide range of genres such as mystery, romance, suspense so it appealed to a lot more people.
6) What technology have you used to access the media in the last 24 hours? (Radio, TV, phone etc.)

I have used my phone to access the media.

7) What device do you use most to access the media?

I use my phone most of the time because I have it with me a lot and it's easy to use.

9) What do we learn about the characters from this brief clip?

I can tell that Sherlock is quite an unusual man because although he could tell so much about his peers, he was oblivious to things that were obvious to the audience. Watson seems more reserved and cautious. He has no idea who Sherlock is and acts wary of him whereas Sherlock takes everything in his stride and acts casually with Watson.

10) What aspects of this show do you think an audience might enjoy? List at least three things and explain why the audience would enjoy each aspect.

Sherlock Holmes character-He's a very odd person and it could provide comedy.
Sherlock's detective skills-His way of finding out so much about Watson intrigues the audience-how did he do it?
Watson and Holmes' friendship-It seems like the two characters are getting to know each other and their friendship could provide a lot of entertainment.
